The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 4 PM on Monday as persistent sloganeering by Opposition members disrupted proceedings, with MPs demanding a discussion on the recent Pahalgam terror attack and the government’s response through Operation Sindoor.
The House, which opened at 11 AM, has now been adjourned multiple times during the day, first till 12 noon, then till 2 PM, and subsequently till 4 PM, as Opposition MPs called for a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the right to speak in the House.
Speaker Om Birla expressed disappointment over the disruptions and urged MPs to uphold parliamentary procedures. “This is the Question Hour and the Government is willing to discuss every issue. The House should function according to the rules and procedures,” he said.
Despite his appeal, Opposition members continued their protests. Congress MP KC Venugopal said, “We are asking for a discussion in the House in the presence of the Prime Minister. All INDIA bloc MPs have submitted adjournment motion notices. If the government truly intends to hold a discussion, it must show it.”
Venugopal also criticised the Speaker for allegedly not allowing Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to speak while Union ministers were permitted to make statements. “This House has become one-sided. Let them start the discussion; we are ready,” he added.
Echoing the demand, Congress MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka told ANI, “The LoP should be allowed to speak. The House will not function until there is a consensus. The government must show maturity and take the Opposition along.”
The Monsoon Session of Parliament, which began today, is scheduled to run until August 21 with a break from August 12 to August 18, comprising 21 sittings over 32 days.
